Hillstream Loach (Sewellia spp. / Beaufortia spp.)
The Hillstream Loach is a fascinating and uniquely shaped freshwater fish known for its flattened body, striking patterns, and remarkable ability to cling to rocks and aquarium glass. Native to the fast-flowing mountain streams of Southeast Asia, these peaceful algae grazers bring both beauty and utility to the aquarium.
Often compared to miniature freshwater stingrays, Hillstream Loaches spend their time grazing on biofilm, algae, and microorganisms found on hard surfaces throughout the tank. Their active behavior and unusual appearance make them a favorite among aquarists looking for something different. They are peaceful fish that do well alongside other non-aggressive community species.
Hillstream Loaches thrive in well-oxygenated aquariums with strong water movement, stable water quality, and plenty of smooth rocks and surfaces for grazing. Established aquariums with natural biofilm growth are ideal, though supplemental foods such as algae wafers, sinking pellets, frozen foods, and blanched vegetables should also be provided.
