The Apistogramma hongsloi is a striking South American dwarf cichlid, admired for its vibrant red and orange coloration, iridescent blue highlights, and distinctive horizontal body stripe. Native to the slow-moving tributaries of the Orinoco River basin in Colombia and Venezuela, this beautiful species is a favorite among aquarists for its brilliant appearance, fascinating behavior, and suitability for planted aquariums.

Apistogramma hongsloi are intelligent, inquisitive fish with plenty of personality. They spend much of their time exploring the lower regions of the aquarium, weaving through plants, driftwood, and caves in search of food and suitable territories. Males develop more intense coloration and elongated finnage, while females display bright yellow breeding colors when guarding eggs or fry. Although generally peaceful toward other community fish, they can become territorial with other bottom-dwelling species and dwarf cichlids, particularly during spawning.

These dwarf cichlids thrive in well-planted aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water, gentle filtration, and an abundance of natural hiding places. A sand substrate, driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and dense vegetation help recreate their native habitat while encouraging natural behaviors and reducing stress. A varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and occasional live foods will help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.
