Apistogramma agassizii "Double Red" (Double Red Agassiz's Dwarf Cichlid)

The Apistogramma agassizii "Double Red" is one of the most popular and brilliantly colored dwarf cichlids in the aquarium hobby, prized for its vivid red finnage, elegant body shape, and fascinating personality. A selectively bred color variety of the South American Apistogramma agassizii, this stunning fish brings vibrant color and natural behavior to planted aquariums and peaceful community setups.

Double Red Agassiz's Dwarf Cichlids are intelligent, curious, and full of character. Males display spectacular extended dorsal, caudal, and anal fins highlighted with brilliant red coloration, while females remain smaller with more subdued yellow and brown tones. They spend much of their time exploring the lower levels of the aquarium, weaving through plants, driftwood, and caves in search of food and suitable territories. While generally peaceful toward other community fish, males can be territorial with other dwarf cichlids, especially during breeding.

These dwarf cichlids thrive in well-planted aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water, plenty of hiding places, and a sand substrate that allows them to exhibit natural foraging behaviors. Driftwood, leaf litter, caves, and dense vegetation help replicate their native habitat and reduce stress. They appreciate a varied diet consisting of high-quality micro pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional live foods to maintain their health, vibrant coloration, and breeding condition.
